2E: Hand dominance support
Are you left handed? Right handed? Perhaps you are one of the minority of the population who are ambidextrous? As your brain developed, hand dominance established itself and this is important as we usually have what we call a ‘working hand’ and a ‘helping hand’.
We would expect to see hand preference developing during the ages 3 – 5, however it can be later. It is important that as educators, we don’t try to force dominance to become established. Nonetheless, there are ways of recognising issues and methods to support as shown on the presentation and video on this page.
Dig Deeper
The "Hand Dominance" presentation on this page has lots more detail about the topic and the video "Crossing the Midline" explains really well what this means and why this is important.
